After 10 years on "Days of our Lives," Steve Blackwood is now living in Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills, Michigan. -- -- The 53-year-old actor returned to his native state in June, 30 years after leaving for the bright lights of Broadway.
So far, he has landed small roles in three movies filmed in Michigan -- "Cedar Rapids," "MOOZ-lum" and "Oogie Loves in the Big Balloon Adventure" -- as well as a key part last month in the play "Boeing-Boeing" at Meadow Brook Theatre.
"I was scared to death of moving back," says Blackwood, who's also been teaching acting classes. "But I'm doing stuff I never would have done in L.A."
In the mid-1970s, he studied theater and English at Oakland University. But, at that time, Michigan didn't offer many opportunities to work in the film and TV business. Blackwood spent many years in New York before heading to Hollywood in 1990.
On "Days of our Lives," Blackwood played a lovable bad guy called Bart Beiderbecke, a role he relished because the soap opera's writers let him have fun with his character.
In 2007, Beiderbecke died after getting caught in the middle of a bloody sword fight, leaving Blackwood without a steady job.
Coming home has paid off, with 35 auditions in two months. He also has been able to help his parents, now in their early 80s. They, in turn, are getting to know their granddaughter, 12-year-old Nicole.
After all that time in the California heat and sun, Blackwood welcomes winter and the change of seasons. "I love shoveling snow," he says. ![]() To hear Steve's Music .. New site updates on 8/20/10 ACTING WORKSHOP NOTICES | |||||||
